Reduce logistics costs, says Joshi
Technology is the need of the hour to revolutionize the logistics and transportation industry, said Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State of the Ministry of Shipping.
“Logistics has a great impact on economy and businesses for which we need to lower the cost of logistics,” he told a webinar organized by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on ‘Creating Multimodal Transport Network Using Big Data’ in New Delhi on 4 Aug 2020.
“We need to use big data and, for the same, we have launched PCS 1x System that will help to identify to make mega data and attain the vision for common infrastructure. We need to make a model for India, looking at the current situation of the country, its vision, and its mission.”
While deliberating on the recent projects undertaken by the Government of connecting the Indian states in a Multi-modal way, he stressed upon the need for Ground Zero Implementation.
H K Joshi, Chairperson & Managing Director, Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), called for a robust and competitive multi-modal logistics sector.
It will go a long way in boosting India’s quest for achieving its aspiration for a prosperous economy.
“We need to unlock the potential of this sector, that can fuel economic growth and development, by building a more robust system; enabling different modes of transportation to seamlessly transfer cargo; ensure that freight is channeled through the most effective network making it faster, safer, cost-effective and energy-efficient,” said Joshi.
Joshi highlighted that infrastructure development has always been a pivotal area for driving the economic development of the nation.
Talking about the challenges in the infrastructure, she said, “We need to reduce the logistics cost, which will increase the competitiveness in the manufacturing sector, making Indian products more competitive in the international market.”
Taking about technology and big data, she called for the inter-connectivity of logistics with technology that will help to revolutionize this industry.
It has the potential to have far-reaching payoffs for a leaner and smarter logistics by ensuring a smoother interface for multimodal logistics stakeholders with seamless delivery.
The focus needs to be on Big Data which is possible with process, planning, and better coordination.
“By doing this, we can achieve the dream of Digital India; at the same time stimulate growth and employment in the economy,” stressed Joshi.
There needs to be a shift from road transportation to use Big data for analyzing data, integrate technology, and do proper planning and then execution, she suggested.
PHD Chamber President Dr. D K Aggarwal added, “We need to implement a Multimodal Transport Network that can change the landscape of logistics in the country.
Putting data and statistics about logistics performance, cost of shipping, and motorways, he highlighted that the use of waterways is very negligible as compared to international countries.
“We have to strengthen our local supply chain, amplify our local manufacturing system, integrate our supply chain with the global supply chain, and promote domestic manufacturing by becoming vocal for local,” added Dr Aggarwal.
India has strength in digital technology and needs to integrate this with the Multimodal Transport Network by identifying the location of logistics parks, said Dr Aggarwal.
Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal, Senior Vice President, PHD Chamber, assured that the chamber will stand in full support with the efforts of the government and will always submit their effective representations to the government for the development of the nation.
Ashish Wig, Chairman, Infrastructure Development Committee, PHD Chamber, discussed the challenges and opportunities for the industry, pointing out that engine-less trains and metro can combine big data, aiding India achieve new heights.
While moderating the session, Dr. Ranjeet Mehta, Principal Director, PHD Chamber, deliberated about the need to create a multimodal transport system due to the high logistics cost and making it competitive in line with international norms. #PHDChamber #Chamber #industry #logistics #transport #warehousing #markets #cargo /fiinews.com
