Gujarat facility to make Dutch-led semiconductors

Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Rob Jetten have welcomed Tata Electronics and ASML partnership for India’s first front-end semiconductor Fab in Gujarat, the PMO said on 16 May as the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

PM Modi highlighted the partnership as an important step in India’s journey for developing a semiconductor ecosystem in the country.

ASML is a Dutch multinational corporation and one of the leading suppliers for high-precision lithography equipment, a critical requirement in manufacturing of semiconductor chips. Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, is an Indian electronics and semiconductor manufacturing company which is establishing a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Gujarat. fiinews.com

Through the partnership, ASML will enable the establishment and successful ramp of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm (12 inch) semiconductor fab.

The collaboration between Tata Electronics and ASML will focus on deploying ASML’s holistic suite of advanced lithography tools and solutions for the Dholera fab. The use of ASML’s industry-leading technologies is expected to ensure seamless operations at India’s first commercial 300 mm semiconductor fab, delivering value to Tata Electronics’ customers. The two companies will cooperate to develop domestic talent, supply chain, and research initiatives to support the long-term success of Tata Electronics’ Dholera fab.

Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD of Tata Electronics, said, “We are excited to partner with ASML, a company known for its innovation and leadership in lithography, and for enabling semiconductor customers globally. ASML’s deep expertise in holistic lithography solutions will ensure the timely ramp of our fab in Dholera, create a resilient and trusted supply chain for our global customers, drive innovation, and develop talent locally. This foundational partnership with ASML brings a shared commitment to the highest standards of quality, yield, and manufacturing excellence, and it will go a long way in building a strong semiconductor ecosystem in India.”

Christophe Fouquet, President & CEO, ASML, elaborated, “India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor sector represents many compelling opportunities, and we are committed to establishing long-term partnerships in the region. Signing this Memorandum of Understanding today marks an important milestone, and we look forward to close collaboration with Tata Electronics and its broader ecosystem. We believe Tata Electronics is strongly positioned to realize its ambitions in expanding semiconductor capabilities. We are pleased and honored to contribute our technological expertise and to help nurture talent in India.”

With a planned total investment of US$11 billion, the facility will manufacture semiconductors for a variety of applications across automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence (AI), and other key segments, to serve customers globally. Tata Electronics has strategically partnered with key global customers and ecosystem companies, starting with PSMC (Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, Taiwan), thereby gaining access to a broad technology portfolio including 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm. Construction of the plant is progressing rapidly. The partnership with ASML is strategic in the journey of Tata Electronics to develop partnerships across the entire semiconductor ecosystem, encompassing equipment, process and design technology, and materials.

The availability of skilled domestic talent is also critical to realizing India’s vision of becoming a leading player in global semiconductor manufacturing. Tata Electronics has partnered with several leading international and Indian companies and institutions to empower young people locally with the necessary knowledge and skills. Together, Tata Electronics and ASML will also drive initiatives to strengthen the domestic talent pipeline and ensure a readily available pool of experts. Fiinews.com
