Rs.700 crore defence contract signed
India has signed a big contract to acquire for 72,400 assault rifles for about Rs.700 crore, reported Press Trust of India on 12 Feb 2019, citing Defence Ministry officials.
SiG Sauer will supply Sig Sauer Assault Rifles over one year from the date of contract signing.
The 7.62X51mm Assault Rifle is compact, robust, modern in technology and simple to maintain in field conditions, the officials said.
The rifles, being used by US forces as well as several other European countries, are being bought under the fast-track procurement procedure.
The Army began the process to acquire around 7 lakh rifles, 44,000 light machine guns (LMGs) and nearly 44,600 carbines in October 2017.
