Gas plans
India is increasing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities and pipeline network to increase the gas share in the energy based to 15 per cent in the next three to five years.
“India aspires to take the share of gas to 15 per cent in the next 3 to 5 years so as to have a new gas based economy,” said Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, highlighting investments in the gas sector.
Current gas share in the Indian energy basket is between 6.5 to 7 per cent, compared to the world average of 24 per cent.
The LNG handling capacity is being enhanced from 21 million tonnes to 50 million tonnes, he said.
The Government is laying 2,500km long pipeline in the eastern region of the country to provide gas to industries and link distribution to seven cities.
“Efforts are being made to have LNG driven bus in Kerala very soon. Long haul driven vehicles and trains would also adopt LNG as fuel,” he said.
Elsewhere, there is a large scope of energy efficiency in Indian refineries while 11 plants are being built to manufacture second generation Ethanol, a biofuel extraction from straws of plants.
The minister spoke at the Memorandum of Understanding signing on “Climate Change Risks: Preparedness for Oil and Gas Sector” in New Delhi on October 13, 2016.
The MoU was signed by PetroFed, an apex society of entities in the Hydrocarbon sector, and The Energy and Research Institute to undertake climate study. fii-news.com
