NRI to fund Ganga rejuvenation

Funds will be generated from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to support the various Ganga projects, said Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Water Resources, Ganga Rejuvenation and River Development.

He has also appealed to the village sarpanches (heads) of the 4,470 villages along Ganga for the mega river cleaning project on India’s holy river, for which the government has worked out initiatives.

Gadkari addressed more than 1,400 delegates including 500 village heads from all five Ganga States (Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal) on 23 Dec 2017.

The ‘Ganga Gram’ is a multi-billion dollar programme for sanitation based integrated development of all 4,470 villages along the River Ganga.

Uma Bharti, Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, stressed for the protection of environment in developing the river.

The government is committed to the development and has Evaluation and Monitoring Systems and Process feature prominently in all Ganga rejuvenation projects.

The massive programme has so far constructed 5.72 crore toilets and has made 2.96 lakh villages, 262 districts, 6 States and 2 Union Territories, open defecation free.

Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation is the nodal agency for implementation of the project. fii-news.com
