Indigenous Automatic Train Protection system Kavach being implemented by Railways

The Indian Railways has approved four projects on 19 Sept, including the provision of Kavach Version 4.0 on 607.7 Route Kilometres of the Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway at a total cost of Rs.252 crore.

The approved project will extend Kavach 4.0 coverage across the identified balance sections of the division, strengthening the safety infrastructure available for train operations.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance operational safety. It helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applies brakes when required and supports safer train movement by monitoring train operations.

The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing deployment of Kavach across its network to modernise train protection systems and enhance the safety and reliability of railway operations, the Ministry of Railways said.

The Railways has also given approval for Rs.209 crore Electronic Interlocking at 7 Stations in Solapur Division of Central Railway.

The approved work involves provision of Electronic Interlocking at Mohol, Mundhewadi, Bale, Solapur, Hotgi Junction-Hotgi A Cabin, Shahabad and Wadi Junction on the High Density Network (HDN) 7 route, where Kavach, Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) and Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) works have been sanctioned.

The modern signalling system will strengthen railway signalling infrastructure across the division and facilitate the implementation of Kavach, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection system.

Electronic Interlocking is a modern computer-based signalling system that replaces conventional relay-based interlocking. It provides more reliable control of points and signals, enables faster fault detection and restoration, facilitates easier maintenance and supports more efficient train operations.

The project is part of Indian Railways’ continuing efforts to modernise signalling infrastructure, strengthen railway safety and improve operational efficiency across high-density routes, added the Ministry.

Indian Railways Approves ₹142 Crore for Upgradation of Electric Traction System to 2×25 kV on 73 RKM Savalyapuram-Guntur Section

Indian Railways has approved t

The electric traction system upgradation from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV on the 73 Route Kilometre Savalyapuram-Guntur section of South Coast Railway has been approved. Costing Rs.142 crore, the 146-track km project will strengthen the electric traction infrastructure and enhance its capacity to support growing railway operations.

The upgradation of the electric traction system on the Savalyapuram-Guntur section forms part of HUN Route 8, covering the Vasco-Gadag-Guntakal-Nandyal-Savalyapuram-Guntur-Vijayawada route.

The upgraded traction system will strengthen the power supply infrastructure for electric train operations on the Savalyapuram-Guntur section, enabling Indian Railways to cater to growing traffic requirements more efficiently. The intervention will also reinforce the capacity and reliability of this important HUN route, supporting smoother train operations and strengthening the overall rail network in the region.

This upgradation reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on modernising traction infrastructure, enhancing network capacity and preparing the railway system for future traffic growth, the Ministry said.

The Rs.133 crore for Construction of Four-Lane Road Over Bridge on Udhna-Ukai Songadh Section of Western Railway has been approved.

The Road Over Bridge (ROB) in lieu of Level Crossing No. 53 at Km 62/2-4 on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of Western Railway is on a cost-sharing basis with the State Government, the Ministry said.

The ROB will be a four-lane structure. The Railway bridge portion will comprise an Open Web Girder (OWG), with an estimated cost of ₹91.60 crore.

The crossing location has a 62% skew, which significantly increases design and construction complexity.

The viaduct portion will have a total length of 311.58 metres, with an estimated cost of ₹19.98 crore. The Railway Approach (RE) portion will have a length of 524.32 metres, with an estimated cost of Rs.10.25 crore.

The Railway share is Rs.66.6147 crore and the State Government share is Rs.66.6148 crore of the total cost of Rs.133.2295 crore, the Ministry added.

The construction of the four-lane ROB will facilitate smoother movement of road traffic, thereby reducing interference with railway operations. The grade-separated infrastructure will support smoother train operations and contribute to safer and more efficient railway movement on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section, benefiting passengers through improved operational efficiency and reliability, said the Ministry.
