Corporate responsibility during an energy crisis should be measured
World stands at a critical energy crossroads especially after a series of wars, cartel of energy producers, and adverse impact of climate change. Rising electricity demand, dependence on fossil fuels, increasing urbanization, industrial growth, and environmental pressures have placed unprecedented strain on the energy system, locally and globally, writes Dr Deepak L. While long-term investments in renewable energy, grid modernization, storage technologies, and infrastructure expansion remain essential, the current situation calls for an equally important response: strategic energy conservation through responsible governance and social behaviour.
Historically, nations facing periods of energy stress have adopted emergency conservation measures that mobilized governments, businesses, and citizens alike. However, conservation efforts cannot be limited to households and industries alone. Leaders, public institutions, corporations, and influential personalities must lead the transition by demonstrating restraint and responsibility in energy consumption.
Ending Energy-Intensive Political Spectacles
One of the most visible forms of energy wastage comes from large-scale political, social, and sports activities (in India). Massive rallies, roadshows, elaborate campaign events, excessive lighting, powerful sound systems, and extensive security deployments consume significant energy and resources while contributing little to essential public services.
During periods of energy stress, political parties, sports bodies, big celebrities, and concert organisations across the spectrum should voluntarily suspend extravagant public mobilization exercises and shift toward digital engagement, televised addresses, virtual town halls, and localized daytime interactions. Such measures would not only reduce energy consumption but also project a strong message of responsibility.
Similarly, ceremonial government functions and leader summits involving extensive decorative lighting, lavish banquets, elaborate receptions, and non-essential public celebrations funded by taxpayers should be minimized. Public funds and energy resources must be directed toward productive purposes rather than symbolic displays of power or prestige.
Reassessing VIP Culture
Long-standing culture of VIP privilege carries hidden energy costs. Large motorcades, airport receptions, convoy welcomes, helicopter travel, private aircraft usage, and oversized security arrangements consume substantial amounts of fuel while emitting unnecessary pollutants.
If an energy conservation mission is to succeed, leaders must embrace austerity. Ministers, legislators, senior bureaucrats, public and United Nations officials should reduce non-essential travel, prioritize rail and commercial aviation for domestic journeys, and rely more heavily on video conferencing technologies. Motorcades should be restricted strictly to genuine security requirements.
Eliminating ceremonial airport receptions, oversized delegations, and excessive entourages would not only conserve fuel but also demonstrate solidarity with ordinary citizens who are being asked to conserve energy in their daily lives.
Government Must Lead by Example
Government offices across globe can achieve substantial energy savings through operational reforms. Air conditioning temperatures should be standardized between 24°C and 26°C. Lighting and equipment should be switched off outside working hours. Digital meetings should replace unnecessary official travel.
During periods of acute energy stress, non-essential departments may consider staggered working hours, hybrid work arrangements, or temporary work-from-home options to reduce electricity consumption and transportation-related fuel use.
Public leadership becomes credible only when citizens can clearly see that government institutions are practicing the same discipline they expect from society.
Corporate Responsibility Beyond Public Relations
Business sector also has a vital role to play. Large corporations should temporarily suspend energy-intensive promotional events, excessive outdoor advertising displays, illuminated billboards, luxury exhibitions, and extravagant celebrations that provide little economic value relative to their energy footprint.
Instead, businesses can shift toward digital marketing, virtual conferences, hybrid events, and targeted communication strategies that consume significantly less energy.
Industries should accelerate energy audits, improve peak-load management, optimize production schedules, and invest in energy-efficient technologies. Rooftop solar systems, electric vehicle fleets, and shared employee transportation can further reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

Citizens Must Embrace Responsible Consumption
Energy conservation is ultimately a societal responsibility. Households can contribute significantly by reducing air-conditioner usage, switching to LED lighting, eliminating standby power consumption, and choosing energy-efficient appliances.
Social traditions also warrant reflection. Lavish weddings and birthday parties, elaborate celebrations, excessive decorative lighting, and high-powered sound systems can consume enormous quantities of electricity. Simpler, environmentally responsible celebrations can preserve cultural values while reducing waste.
Transportation choices matter as well. Greater use of public transport, carpooling, cycling, and rail travel can reduce fuel demand, lower emissions, and ease pressure on urban infrastructure.
A Global Movement for Clean and Green Mobility
Transport sector remains one of the largest consumers of imported petroleum products. Accelerating public transport adoption, expanding electric mobility infrastructure, creating vehicle-free urban zones, and encouraging work-from-home arrangements where feasible can yield immediate benefits.
Use of technology-based traffic management initiatives, including congestion-control measures and demand-reduction strategies, may also be considered during periods of severe energy shortages.
Every litre of fuel saved strengthens energy security while reducing environmental impacts.
The Power of Symbolic Leadership
Perhaps the most important conservation measure is symbolic leadership. Citizens pay attention to the behaviour of those in authority. When leaders travel modestly, avoid unnecessary luxury, reduce entourages, and conduct low-energy public engagements, they send a powerful signal that conservation is a shared national duty rather than a burden imposed on others.
A campaign built around the message “Save Energy, Serve the Humanity” could inspire collective action. Public recognition should be given to institutions, companies, and leaders who demonstrate measurable reductions in energy consumption.
The Way Forward
World energy future cannot be secured through infrastructure alone. New power plants, renewable energy projects, battery storage systems, and transmission networks are necessary, but they are only part of the solution.
Equally important is a cultural shift toward responsible consumption. Curtailing unnecessary showmanship in politics, governance, business, and society represents one of the fastest, least expensive, and most effective measures available today. By reducing wasteful displays, limiting VIP excesses, embracing technological alternatives, and encouraging behavioural change, we can lower peak electricity demand, reduce fuel imports, cut pollution, and strengthen national energy resilience.
The energy crisis presents an opportunity to redefine leadership. At this moment, true leadership is not displayed through huge rallies, longer motorcades, brighter lights, or grander celebrations. It is demonstrated through restraint, accountability, and the willingness to put national, regional, and global interest ahead of personal prestige.
Only when leaders and citizens conserve together can world successfully navigate its energy challenges and build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
