India-Singapore complements each other, says MoPSW Secretary
India and Singapore are working out details for infrastructure to be set up for digital corridor collaboration and green shipping as a part of a larger collaboration by both the countries in line with the global decarbonization initiatives being undertaken by the world’s maritime industries to be environmentally-friendly.
“A road map for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is being worked out with infrastructure details,” Vijay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said at the Singapore Maritime Week 2026, held 20-24 April.
The MoU follows up on upgrading work based on a Letter of Intent signed on maritime digitalization (Digital Corridor Collaboration) and Decarbonisation (Green Shipping) at the same show last year (2025) by Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
Details such as investment, storage tank capacity, pipelines, bunkering facilities and the future demand for green fuel are being worked on.
India and Singapore complement each other – India for its cheaper green energy and resources among others, and Singapore for being a global shipping and maritime hub. “As such, we are working together on developing all opportunities,” Press Trust of India quoted Kumar as saying.
Kumar also represented India in a 12-country closed-door marine industry development program attended by top stakeholders and ministers.
The Indian delegation at the four-day maritime week includes senior decision-makers from the Directorate General of Shipping, Shipping Corporation of India, VOC Port Authority, Deendayal Port Authority, major Indian Shipyards, and the Indian Ports Association. Several bilateral engagements are also planned for the delegation.
Singapore’s Senior Minister of State Ministry of Transport Murali Pillai inaugurated the 160-sq m Indian Pavillion at the maritime week on Tuesday. In addition to displays by exhibitors, scale models of ships and a simulator are being showcased. Some of the exhibitors in the Pavilion include the Indian Ports Association, VOC Port Authority Tuticorin, Deendayal Port Authority Kandla, National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts, Cochin Shipyard, Directorate General of Shipping, Indian Register of Shipping, Tangar Ship Management, and Bombay Nautical Ventures among others.
More than 20,000 participants from close to 80 countries and regions including ministers and stakeholders attended the 20th edition of the event held annually. Fiinews.com
