Biswas sees global veg-vegan market of 1.9bn people by 2030
New Delhi-based Sattvik Certifications has started its global expansion from Singapore, starting with the launch of ‘Buddhist Codex’, a vegetarian-vegan food code for the Buddhist community in the city state while it is working on similar codes to be introduced in the US and Canadian markets by end of this year.
Sattvik Certifications founder Abhishek Biswas, working on launching a similar code for vegetarian-vegan foods in Indonesia next month, cited strong demand for certified veg-vegan foods, estimating that 1.9 billion people would be consuming healthy plant-based foods globally by 2030.
“The demand for vegetarian and vegan foods is huge across the world and Sattvik Certifications is among few groups that are taking initiatives to certified food manufacturers and laboratories to assure certified healthy meals are served,” Biswas said at the launch of Buddhist Codex on 24 Aug by the one-year-old Sattvik Certifications Singapore Pte Ltd (SCSG), an ASEAN headquarter company to serve the South East Asian markets.
He dismissed the common notion that plant-based foods are expensive, and pointed out the eventual high medical costs that would come from ailment caused by non-vegetarian foods.
“Due to its very high per-capita health-care costs, the US could save US$180 billion if the population ate according to recommended vegetarian-vegan guidelines, compared to US$250 billion if the Americans eschewed animal food products altogether,” he said.
“An important fact to note is that the additional food that would be produced as a result of a shift to a vegan diet in the US alone could feed 350 million additional people,” said Biswas, citing World Economic Forum data.
Further, there is also evidence that switching to a vegan diet in the US would save between US$197 billion and US$298 billion per year, he said, highlighting the WEF statistics.
In India, the success is Railway caterer IRCTC serving 8,000 – 10,000 Sattvik certified meals daily in trains like Shatabdhi, Rajdhani and Vande Bharat, according to Biswas.
Sattvik Certifications is already working on certifying vegetarian-vegan foods with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates.
Likewise, Sattvik Certifications is working in Indonesia with Jakarta-based tourism related businesses led by PIP Group.
