Pichai underlines Google’s $10bn investment commitment to India
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Google will open its global fintech operation center in GIFT City, Gujarat, and has committed a US$10 billion investment to Indian digitisation programme.
The move will cement India’s fintech leadership position and leverage the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Aadhaar, he told Modi during a meeting in Washington D.C. on 24 June 2023.
“We are excited today that we are announcing the opening of our global fintech operation centre in GIFT City,” he said.
Pichai commended the progress India has made, particularly in the realm of digital innovation and economic opportunities.
He highlighted Google’s commitment to India’s digital transformation, with a total investment of US$10 billion in the country’s digitisation fund.
He emphasised that Google’s investments in India will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, including the development of technologies that support Indian languages.
He underlined plans to expand the availability of Google’s AI-powered voice assistant, Bard, to more Indian languages in the near future.
