Ministry partially funds 20 port modernization projects at Rs.1,191 crore
More than 800 projects, estimated to cost Rs.5.4 lakh crore, have been identified under the Sagarmala Programme, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on 16 Dec 2022.
These are various categories of projects such as modernisation of existing ports and terminals, new ports, terminals, Ro-Ro and tourism jetties, enhancement of port connectivity, inland waterways, lighthouse tourism, industrialization around port, skill development, technology centres, etc.
These projects are broadly classified into five pillars of Sagarmala development, he said.
Under the port modernization pillar, 241 projects, costing around Rs.2.5 lakh crore have been undertaken for implementation.
The Ministry is partially funding 20 port modernization projects at an estimated cost of Rs.1,191 crore. Out of total 20 projects, 4 projects worth Rs.157 crore have been completed and 11 projects worth Rs. 868 crore are under implementation.
In Paradip Port, 4 major capacity addition infrastructure projects worth Rs.3,264 crore have been implemented over the last 7 years. These projects have increased the capacity of port by 55 MTPA Details of Port Modernization projects at Paradip Port.
Details of Port Modernization projects at Paradip Port:
Development of multipurpose berth to handle clean cargo including containers on BOT basis, on estimated cost of Rs.431 to add 55 million tonnes per annum capacity.
Development of new iron ore berth for handling iron ore exports on BOT basis, at a cost of Rs.740 crore. It would add 10 MTPA.
Mechanisation of EQ1- EQ2 and EQ3 Berths on BOT basis, at an estimated cost of Rs.1,438 crore to add 30 MTPA.
Development of New Coal for handling Coal Imports on BOT basis, costing Rs.656 crore to add 10 MTPA..
Additionally, projects have been awarded for deepening and optimization of inner harbour facilities including development of Western Dock on BOT basis to Handle Cape Size Vessels. The contracts are worth Rs.3,004.63 crore.
Gopalpur, a notified Non-Major Ports in Odisha, has been developed and operationalized by the State Government under Gopalpur Ports Limited (GPL) through PPP mode on BOOST basis. Hence, it is the responsibility of GPL to modernize and to augment the capacity of Gopalpur Port, he said. fiinews.com
