In-principle approvals given to five nuke power sites
The Government has accorded administrative approvals and financial sanctions for setting up 10 indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) of 700 MW capacity each in fleet mode, four of which are in cooperation with France, Russia and the United States of America.
On the progressive completion of projects under construction and accorded sanctions, the installed nuclear power capacity is expected to reach 22,480 MW by the year 2031 which includes Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) [500 MW] being implemented by BHAVINI, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh, said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on 23 Mar 2022.
In addition to the sanctioned projects, the government has also accorded ‘In-Principle’ approvals of the following five new sites for setting up nuclear power projects:
Jaitapur, Maharashtra 6 X 1,650 MW in cooperation with France;
Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh 6 X 1,208 MW with the US;
Chhaya, MithiVirdi, Gujarat 6 X 1,000 with the US;
Haripur, West Bengal 6 X 1,000 MW with Russia;
Bhimpur, Madhya Pradesh 4 X 700 MW Indigenous.
The 22,480 MW capacity by 2031 includes 8,700 MSW currently under construction.
The present capacity is 6,780 MW while target for turn of the century, 2100, has not been set as yet, he said.
Meanwhile, he also updated the house with details of nuclear power projects accorded administrative approvals and financial sanctions during the last five years.
These are:
Tamil Nadu: Kudankulam KKNPP-5&6 2 X 1,000 MW Under Construction;
Karnataka: Kaiga Kaiga-5&6 2 X 700 MW.
Pre-project activities at sites and bulk procurement of long manufacturing cycle equipment are in progress, he said.
These are for:
Haryana: Gorakhpur GHAVP– 3&4 2 X 700 MW;
Madhya Pradesh: Chutka Chutka-1&2 2 X 700 MW;
Rajasthan MahiBanswara Mahi Banswara-1&2 2 X 700 MW;
Mahi Banswara-3&4 2 X 700 MW.
On progressive completion of these nuclear power projects, a total capacity of 9,000 MW would be added to the country’s nuclear energy.
Presently, no nuclear power project is pending approval from the Government, Dr. Singh told the house. fiinews.com
