Heavy water reactors set for implementation
The Government has approved and given financial sanction fr 12 nuclear power reactors in the country, said Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on 15 Mar 2018.
These projects are:
Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) to be set up in fleet mode in Madhya Pradesh – Chutka-1&2 2 X 700MW.
Karnataka – Kaiga-5&6 2 X 700MW.
Rajasthan – Mahi Banswara-1&2 2 X 700MW.
Haryana – GHAVP–3&4 – 2 X 700MW.
Rajasthan – Mahi Banswara-3&4 – 2 X 700MW.
Light Water Reactor (LWR) to be set up in cooperation with Russian Federation: Tamil Nadu – Kudankulam 0 KKNPP–5&6 X 1000 MW.
In addition, the Government has accorded ‘In principle’ approval of the following sites for setting up nuclear power plants in future.
Madhya Pradesh – Bhimpur 4 X 700MW.
Maharashtra – Jaitapur 6 x 1650MW.
Andhra Pradesh – Kovvada 6 x 1208MW.
Gujarat – Chhaya Mithi Virdi 6 x 1000MW
West Bengal – Haripur 6 x 1000W.
There is no proposal currently to locate a nuclear power plant in the state of Kerala. However, Kerala is allotted 140 MW & 133 MW share of electricity from KKNPS Units-1&2 (2X1000 MW) respectively. fii-news.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is mandated to implement the first stage of the indigenous three-stage nuclear power programme comprising of natural uranium fuelled Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and Light Water Reactors (LWRs) set up with foreign technical cooperation.
NPCIL activities include all aspects of commercial nuclear power reactors encompassing Design, Construction, Commissioning, Operation & Maintenance, Renovation & Modernisation, Research & Development, Upgrades, Life Management and Waste Management. fii-news.com
