Green projects being implemented
Indian Railways’ (IR) capital and development budget is slated for further increase in the coming years, said Mohd Jamshed, Member Traffic, Railway Board.
IR is targeted to spend Rs.1.31 lakh crore in 2017-18. The CAPEX has spent Rs.54,000 crore in 2014-15, Rs.94,000 crore in 2015-16 and Rs.1.11 Lakh crore in 2016-17
“Railways, roads and rivers are the lifeline of our country. We are now able to synergize the investments in railways, roads, waterways and civil aviation,” he said.
Mohd Jamshed was speaking at the National Rail Transport Seminar with the theme “Railways for Sustainable Development” in New Delhi 13 Jan 2018.
He listed out some of the green projects:
Work is going on for 100% electrification of Indian Railways over next 5 years to reduce carbon emissions.
Among other developments, IR is installing 500 MW solar plants to reduce dependence of fossil fuels.
These are being installed at stations, hospitals and station buildings.
IR is also working on wind power mills, blended bio-diesel and exploring other alternate fuels like Compressed Natural Gas.
Other IR projects includes improving water use efficiency and rain water harvesting, planting trees along the railway track as well as constructing green buildings. fii-news.com
