Indians spend over US$20bn on overseas studies

The highly regulated education sector is being liberalized and private sector participation is being encouraged for India to acquire global citizenship in education, Dr. N. Saravana Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The government is also in the process of finalizing the new national education policy which will focus on making India’s education system learner-centric instead of teacher-centric, he said at a conference on education on 9 Nov 2017.
Indian students spend more than US$20 billion on studying abroad and there was a need to make India the centre of education, added Sudhanshu Pandey, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Pandey called for creation and facilitation of an ecosystem where students can attain excellence in their chosen domains.
A bridge of understanding needed to be created between industry and academia so that both can move forward together, he added.
The education sector is undergoing disruptive changes with the advent of new pedagogy, assessment systems and delivery of knowledge, according to Prof. Vinod Bhat, co-chair of FICCI Higher Education Summit.
“Therefore, there is a need to focus on learning which is outcome and result-oriented,” he added.
They were speaking at the 13th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2017. It is organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) with support from government and agencies. fii-news.com
