Domestic industry to get Rs.70,000 crore orders.
India is fast-tracking its domestic nuclear power programme with 10 projects of 7,000 MW capacity, orders from which will boost domestic manufacturing industry.
The cabinet has approved 10 indigenous Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) on May 17, 2017, which will generate manufacturing orders close to Rs.70,000 crore for the domestic industry and strengthen India’s credentials as a major nuclear manufacturing powerhouse.
The 10 reactors will be part of India’s latest design of 700 MW PHWR fleet with state-of-art technology meeting the highest standards of safety.
The current installed nuclear power capacity of 6,780 MW comes from 22 operational plants while another 6,700 MWs of nuclear power is expected to come onstream by 2021-22 from projects presently under construction.
The 10 units will come up in fleet mode as a fully homegrown initiative under the flagship “Make in India” projects.
“The project will help transform Indian nuclear industry by linking our goal of a strong nuclear power sector with our indigenous industrial capacities in high-end technologies,” said the government in a press note.
It is expected to generate more than 33,400 jobs in direct and indirect employment. fii-news.com
