Focus on automobile industry
India aims to make automobiles manufacturing the main driver of “Make in India” initiative, expecting passenger vehicles market to reach 9.4 million units by 2026 as per the Auto Mission Plan (AMP) 2016-26.
The Government has also formulated a Scheme for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in India, under the National Electric Mobility Mission 2020 to encourage the progressive induction of reliable, affordable and efficient electric and hybrid vehicles in the country, a senior government official has said.
Industries and industrial organizations have to explore the funding strategies, models, mechanisms for designs, said Girish Shankar, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises .
Work on the development and see how the outcome of these strategizes can be monetized, said Shanker at an International Automotive Design Conclave 2016 held in New Delhi September 16, 2016.
“While India has demonstrated growing capabilities in Auto manufacturing and have successfully designed and built new vehicles, we need to increasingly focus on auto design aspects,” said Arvind Kapur, Managing Director, RICO Auto Industries.
India should become the society of Design and Innovation, in which the private sector has a critical role in developing the growth potential of the design industry, urged Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog).
The Government will very soon open 4 to 5 more design institutes while the private sector should also open design institutes for nurturing talent and innovating minds, he called.
Indian companies need to think large to penetrate global markets by focusing on exports and becoming an integral part of the Global Supply Chain, stressed Kant.
“Make in India” is also about Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation and continuous improvement. Digital/IT companies and manufacturing companies need to work together to create a disruptive culture for creating globally competitive designs, he pointed out.
The conclave, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry, was attended by over 400 industry participants from within India as well as abroad. fii-news.com
