Report on port infrastructure
A Shipping Ministry report has called for setting up of new trans-shipment port, creating dedicated berths for coastal shipping, setting up storage capacities at origin-destination ports to shorten turnaround time and developing adequate ship-repair facilities in the maritime states.
The report prepared under the Ministry’s Sagarmala programme, it calls for creation of efficient infrastructure and logistic chain centres.
The report estimates cargo traffic at India ports reaching 2.5 billion metric tons a year by 2025.
It calls for cargo movements through seaports to boost economic development.
Currently, 95% of India’s trade by value and 70 % by volume is through maritime transport.
To improve efficiency in logistics management across the country, the Sagarmala development seeks public-private-partnerships for port, coastal shipping and railway infrastructures. fii-news.com
