NGO Sorghum United promotes benefits of consuming millet globally

Millet is becoming more and more popular as a food product globally, according to Nate Blum, the US-based CEO of Sorghum United, a global Non-Government Organization formed in 2023 following the declaration of “Year of Millet” in that same year.

He noted that people in Brazil and Africa were learning the benefits of consuming millet products while bakeries in the United States were getting ready to make millet-based products as well as millet-pasta was being made and served in some European some countries.

The market outlook was shared at Namaste Bharat by Blum, one of the lead promoters of Sorghum United and the nutritional value of millet following an initiative promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by having UN declared 20232 Year of Millet.

The food product based on millet are being increasingly consumed across the world, according to observation by Blum, an innovative figure in the world of agriculture, notably in the realm of grain sorghum production and marketing as well as the Chief Executive Officer of BlüMilo and Sorghum United, from where his contribution has significantly amplified the understanding and market development of sorghum and related small grains.

“2023 will provide an opportunity to increase global production, efficient processing and better use of crop rotation and promote millets as a major component of the food basket,” a former Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had said then nseindia .

“We began as a startup NGO in January 2023 alongside the Year of Millet which was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Government. That was the impetus for creation of our organization,” Blum said at the three-day exhibition which drew over 25,000 visitors during the weekend of Oct 4-6, 2024 sbi .

The NGO has grown to 4,000 stakeholders located on every continent within the last 22 months, starting from just about 200 stakeholders, informed Blum. It is located across all continents and is growing presence in the Indian market bseindia .

Sorghum United has signed a dozen MoUs with institutions, many of which are in India, and have just signed one with the University of Agriculture and Technology in Kanpur csauk.ac.in .

Sorghum United is doing a lot of work in India, and is trying to create a consumer-led movement that would create a value chain and help create a market for millet-sorghum wto.org , he underlined. Fiinews.com
