Free-call app, nanu will be embedded in smartphones to be launched by Intex, one of India’s leading smartphone maker.
It can be used on any network, including 2G, allowing calls from locations where other apps do not work, said Martin Nygate, chief executive officer of Gentay Communications Pte Ltd, which produced nanu.
“Despite the boom in the smartphone market in India, connectivity to 3G networks remains an issue, especially in rural areas. The majority of phones in those areas use 2G networks,” he pointed out.
“But having nanu embedded in Intex smartphones means millions of people in rural and developing areas will have access to free calls,” Nygate added.
With more than 1.5 million downloads, India has become nanu’s biggest market, according for more than 50 per cent of its user base.
Intex said preloading the free call app working in 2G environment will provide significant added value to its customers.
“Smartphones have become an increasingly competitive sector, especially in India where cost performance is vital. You need to provide customers with something more than just a gadget. We believe that embedding nanu, which allows users to make calls as soon as they insert a SIM card, will not only prove to be a big attraction but will also revolutionize the market,” said Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, Business Head, Mobiles, Intex Technologies (India) Ltd.
Intex will preload nanu in two new models to be launched in the coming months.
“The new phones with nanu embedded, targeted at the mass market, will help Intex further differentiate ourselves from our closest competitors,” Mr Kalirona added.
Developed for the emerging markets, nanu is available on Google Android and Apple iOS. It utilizes proprietary ultra-low bandwidth VoIP technology and an advert sponsored free call business model for free calls to everyone, everywhere even on 2G.
