The Indian Air Force is in the process of acquiring about 200 aircraft out of which expression of interest has been floated for 110.

The aircraft will be for replacing those being retired, said Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar on 12 Jan 2020 in Kolkata.

“We are in the process of finalizing the contract for 83 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A, which are advanced fighters to meet the urgent needs of India,” Press Trust of India quoted Kumar as saying.

Contracts for the LCAs will definitely be signed this year, he told reporters on the sidelines of commissioning Indian Coast Guard Vessels.

Design has been finalized while state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will be double LCA Mark 1A production to 16 from eight per year.

“If required, through outsourcing, we can further enhance it,” he said of increasing production.

The Air Force’s inventory is made of Sukhoi 30 MKIs, Mirage 2000s, Mig 29s and the ageing Jaguars and MIG Bisons.

The last fleet of seven swing-wing MiG-27 was decommissioned on 27 Dec 2019. fiinews.com
