Garden Reach to build Indian Navy ships

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) has won an order for providing classification services for a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes to be built for the Indian Navy.

The ships are to be constructed at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, Kolkata, on IRClass’ Naval Rules 2015.

The ships are designed for combating threats posed by submarines and special underwater craft, operating in relatively shallow waters. The ships will have advanced sensors, including sonars and anti-submarine weapon systems and will be equipped with modern automation system.

A key feature of each vessel will be the minimization of its noise signature and radar cross section, said IRClass in a release on 8 Mar 2019. IRClass will be required to certify that the vessel design meets these requirements.

“Winning this order, close on the heels of two other orders awarded for major vessels of the Indian Navy, is an important milestone for the Defence Division of IRClass,” said Suresh Sinha, Managing Director of IRClass. The two recent orders are for diving support vessels and large survey vessels.
