Collaborations and tech-transfer planned

A major decision is expected on British technology and defence exports to India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 19-20 April visit to London for the Commonwealth Heads of Government, visiting UK Minister, Guto Bebb, said in Chennai on 11 April 2018.

The UK Minister for Defence Procurement Bebb said opportunities were being studied by his government for expanding the UK Defence industry participation in developments taking place in India.

Fighter jets Typhoon and Hawks are among the technology-driven offers from the United Kingdom for being part of India’s development programmes.

UK companies have a strong foothold both with the Indian Public Sector Units and Private Sector industries.

He sees growing collaboration and technology transfer between British and Indian companies, in some cases citing the need to develop partnership on case-by-base basis, considering critical information sensitivities.

Underlining the importance of developing industrial relationships and capabilities, Bebb noted the dynamic nature of the Indian economy, and highlighted the “inter-dependence of our companies in many ways”.

Collaborations and partnerships are the way forward, said Bebb, pointing out the determination of taking forward the current business relationship with “strong support from political leaders”.

Speaking to reporters at the DefExpo 2018 in Chennai on 11 April, the minister said he was in India to gain deep understanding of requirements in India.

The minister is holding a series of bilateral meetings on his first visit to India.

Underlining the importance of developing industrial relationships and capabilities, Bebb noted the dynamic nature of the Indian economy, and highlighted the “inter-dependence of our companies in many ways”.
