Ministry of Food Processing Industries has approved 170 applications under various categories of the Production Linked Incentive scheme for Food Processing Industries (PLISFPI) till Sept 2025. The scheme has led to increase in food processing capacity of 35.00 lakh MT per annum in the country, the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha 12 Dec http://commerce.gov.in.
About 3.39 Lakhs, both Direct and Indirect employment, have been generated so far under the PLISFPI. The data on farmers benefited under the scheme is not maintained.
The incentives under the PLISFPI are admissible where the entire chain of manufacturing processes, including primary processing, of the food products applied for coverage under the scheme takes place in India. Total export of agricultural processed food products approved under PLISFPI has increased with a CAGR of 13.23% as on 2024-25 with reference to 2019-20 https://www.bseindia.com/.
Meanwhile, the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management, at Kundli, Haryana and Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, which are autonomous institutes under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, have collaborated with several educational and research institutions to strengthen academic, technical, research and capacity-building initiatives in the food processing sector. NIFTEM-Thanjavur has conducted short term courses on Cold Chain Management.
The Ministry has been implementing a Scheme for Creation of Infrastructure for Agro Processing Clusters (APC), a component scheme of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) for development of modern infrastructure to encourage entrepreneurs to set up food processing units based on cluster approach in the country https://www.nseindia.com/.
“This is a demand-driven scheme,” said the Minister, adding that his Ministry provides preference to those proposals under APC scheme, that are to be set up in agri-horti clusters identified from time to time by Department of Agriculture, Co-operation and Farmers Welfare (DAC&FW) under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), APEDA etc., by awarding additional 5 marks in the assessment / evaluation criteria https://sbi.com.in/.
Regular review and monitoring of the projects approved under the APC scheme is done by Ministry through Project Management Agencies (PMAs). Further, a third-party impact evaluation study of the scheme for Creation of Infrastructure for Agro Processing Clusters (APC) has been conducted recently at the end of 15th Finance Commission Cycle through Quality Council of India.
