India has 133,410 MW large hydro potential
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is preparing 17 hydroelectric projects aggregating to 11,376 MW and 38 PSPs aggregating to 55,330 MW for Detailed Project reports (DPRs), parliament was updated on 1 Aug.
These projects are currently under Survey & Investigation (S&I) by CEA, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha sansad.in .
CEA has concurred 24 hydroelectric schemes including PSPs with an aggregate installed capacity of 15,569 MW during the last 10 years, he informed parliamentarians globaltenders .
The exploitable large hydro potential in India is 133,410 MW, according to a reassessment study by CEA for 2017-23 conexpoconagg .
Further, the CEA has identified pumped storage potential (PSP) of 176,280 MW, he said in an update to the house hydropower .
The Minister further elaborated on initiatives taken by the Government to harness the hydro potential including the hydro pumped storage potential hydro-2024 .
These are:
Declaring large hydropower projects (capacity above 25 MW) as renewable energy source renewable-world .
Hydro Purchase Obligation (HPO) as a separate entity within Non-solar Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) officialenergyasia.
Tariff rationalization measures for bringing down hydropower tariff.
Budgetary support for Flood Moderation/Storage hydroelectric projects meed tenders.
Budgetary support towards cost of enabling infrastructure, i.e. roads/bridges europa funding-tenders .
Guidelines to promote development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) in the country was issued on 10th April, 2023.
Waiver of Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for hydroelectric projects and PSPs ted.europa.
Reduction of timeline by CEA for concurrence of Detailed Project Report.
The Minister also cited an example of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) on 3 Jan 2024 by the 850MW Ratle Hydro Electric Power Corporation Limited (RHPCL) and Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Limited energyrajasthan .
Ratle Hydroelectric Project will supply power for a period of 40 years at a tariff to be determined by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). Fiinews.com
