Sekhri calls for tech fund and PLI-2 for apparel sector
Tiruppur, with textile product exports of Rs.30,000 crore in 2021-22, is a good example of duplicating textile hubs in 75 districts across India, says Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
The exports from “Dollar Town”, as it is dubbed, grew by about 2,000 times from Rs.15 crore in 1985, noted the Minister.
The Government wants to create 75 Textile hubs like Tiruppur which will not only support textile product exports and ensure inclusion of sustainable technology, but will also generate huge opportunities for employment, he said on 26 June 2022 during visit to Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu.
Considering the unprecedented growth of the textile sector in the region, the compounded annual growth rate at Tiruppur comes to 22.87% over 37 years.
MSME contribute 95% of total 1,200 exporting units in Tiruppur.
Goyal participated in the Exporter’s Meet cum Felicitation Function at Tiruppur.
He had an interactive meeting with representatives of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) and Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) among others.
FIEO President Dr A Sakthivel, in his welcome address, appreciated the efforts of the Government in addressing the issues of exporters quickly and opening up vistas of market opportunities.
APEC Vice Chairman Sudhir Sekhri requested for a new Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) and Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI-2) for the apparel sector.
He also requested for export of cotton and cotton yarn to be suitably calibrated to ensure that cotton and cotton yarn is available to the exporting units at competitive prices. fiinews.com
