GHG emissions reduced by 27 lakh MT, says Ministry
The Government has brought forward its target of 20% blending under the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme to 2025-26 from earlier target date of 2030, highlighting that 10% blending has been achieved across the country and ahead of the November 2022 target.
This achievement in the course of last 8 years has not only augmented India’s energy security but also translated into a forex impact of over Rs.41,500 crores, reduced GHG emissions of 27 lakh MT and also led to the expeditious payment of over Rs.40,600 crores to farmers, said the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on 5 June 2022.
The EBP Programme, along with other Government initiatives, is to enhance India’s energy security, reduce import dependency on fuel, save foreign exchange, address environmental issues and give a boost to domestic agriculture sector.
Coordinated efforts of the Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have attained an average 10% ethanol blending in petrol across the country, said the Ministry.
Encouraged by this achievement, the ‘National Policy on Biofuels’, notified by the Government in 2018, sees 20% ethanol blending by 2025-26, well ahead of the original target date of 2030. fiinews.com
