Efficient ports making India a trade-logistics global hub

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted the Government’s commitment to port-led development through the Sagarmala Scheme for which about 575 projects at a total cost of over Rs.6 lakh crore have been identified for implementation during the 2015-2035 period.

The projects are: Port modernisation, New port development, Port connectivity enhancement, Port-linked industrialisation and Coastal community development.

A new Multi-Modal Logistics Park is going to be launched soon at Mappedu near Sriperumbudur in Chennai, he announced.

He further added that the ‘8-laning of Korampallam Bridge and Rail Over Bridge was also taken up under ‘Sagarmala programme’. The Project will facilitate seamless and congestion free transit to and from the Port and will also further reduce the turnaround time of the cargo trucks.

Launching various projects related to V.O. Chidambaranar Port at Thoothukudi on 25 Feb 2021, he pointed out that efficient ports contribute to making India a global hub for trade as well as logistics.

He expressed appreciated that the port has taken up grid-connected 5 MW ground based solar power plant at a cost of Rs.20 crore and installation of 140 KW rooftop solar project is in progress.

He also inaugurated and laid foundation stones of various development projects in Coimbatore.

Modi dedicated to the nation the 1,000 MW Neyveli New Thermal Power Project and 709 MW Solar Power Project of NLCIL.

Foundation stone was also laid for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a 5-MW grid connected ground based solar power plant at V.O. Chidambaranar Port and for the extension, renovation and modernisation of Lower Bhavani Project System.

The Prime Minister has laid foundation stones for the development of Integrated Command and Control Centers (ICCC) in nine Smart Cities including Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Thanjavur, Vellore, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.

Addressing the project-related ceremony, the Prime Minister said Coimbatore is a city of industry and innovation, and the development work will benefit Coimbatore and the entire Tamil Nadu.

Modernization of Bhawani Sagar Dam will irrigate over 2 lakh acres of land and benefit farmers of several districts, he added.

Several major power projects, as one of the basic needs of industrial growth is continuous power supply, were also inaugurated.

The 709 MW solar power project is indigenously developed, costing over Rs.3,000 crore, said Modi, adding that another 1,000 MW thermal power project constructed at a cost of Rs.7,800 crore will be for Tamil Nadu’s benefit, as over 65% of the power generated will be given to the state.

During his visit to the southern Indian regions, Modi said the Puducherry Port Development, under Sagarmala Scheme, will provide much needed sea connectivity to Chennai and facilitate the cargo movement for industries of Puducherry, easing the load on Chennai port.

Laying the foundation stone for the minor port, he pointed out that fishermen will use it as a base for venturing further into the sea for fishing.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stones for 4 laning of NH45-A covering Karaikal District and Medical College Building at Karaikal New Campus-Phase I, Karaikal District (JIPMER) and Synthetic Athletic Track, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Puducherry.

Among other projects, Modi inaugurated the Blood Centre at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in the Union Territory and a 100-bed girls’ hostel at Lawspet for female athletes.

He also inaugurated the reconstructed Heritage Marie Building, wishing it will add to the beauty of Beach Promenade and attract more tourists.

The Prime Minister underlined that healthcare would play a key role in the coming years. In line with the objective of providing quality health care to all, the Blood Centre in JIPMER will accommodate advanced facilities for long term storage of blood, blood products and stem cells banking. He added that the facility will function as a research laboratory and a training centre for personnel training in all aspects of transfusion.

The Prime Minister said, “We need quality health professionals to promote quality healthcare.”
