India needs more R&D, innovation and creation of cutting-edge technologies to become self-reliant in defence production, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.

He was inaugurating the 7th edition of Engineers Conclave 2019 in Bengaluru on 19 Sept 2019. This year’s conclave is based on two themes, ‘Defence Technology & Innovation’ and ‘Transformation of Rural India Using Digital Technologies’.

He emphasised that developing critical and cutting-edge technologies indigenously will make the country self-sufficient, saving the precious foreign exchange, which could be utilised in other development activities in the country.

Singh described continuous innovation as the key to success for any nation, given the fast pace at which technology becomes obsolete every passing day.

“It is well said that when nations go to war, the one with the best technology is most likely to win”, said the Minister.

Stressing on the need for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Defence, Singh said AI is capable of bringing significant transformations in the way future military operations would be conducted. He said the Government has already prepared a roadmap for making India a significant power of AI application in Defence.

He emphasised on technology and innovation in the defence sector as it has enormous spin-off benefits for the masses as well.

During his day-long visit to Bengaluru, Singh visited Centre for Airborne Systems, DRDO, where he was shown several indigenous products of various DRDO labs.

The products included AEW&C, Radar Systems, EW Systems, UAV’s, Nirbhay Missile, Robotic vehicles, Indigenous Aircraft Engine, Small Turbofan Engine, Bio Medical Systems, Microwave transmitters for missiles, semiconductor components and several other products.

Addressing the DRDO fraternity at Centre for Airborne Systems, the Minister appreciated the constant effort put forth by the scientists and technicians in the development of indigenous defence systems.

He highlighted the continuing success of ASTRA missile, LCA Tejas and successful utilization of NETRA in Balakot has re-imposed the confidence of country in DRDO. He declared that with continuing efforts, country should aim at meeting the requirement of our Defense Services through indigenous efforts. Fiinews.com
