More SMEs to venture into India

The Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) is aiming to have more Singapore companies participate in India’s industrial development through collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

“I would like to see more Singapore small and medium enterprises (SMEs) going to India,” said SICCI Chairman Dr T. Chandroo.

He pointed out that some 8,000 companies from India have registered in Singapore, making it one of the largest concentration of country-based business grouping.

Data on the number of Singapore companies working in is not available but it is estimated to be over 100 at most.

CII has agreed in-principle to collaborate with SICCI on this initiative. A meeting is scheduled for 20 August 2018 to work out details of the collaboration, said Dr Chandroo.

“We want some collaboration where we can partner CII and seek an understanding where they can help Singapore companies go to India and help Indian companies come to Singapore,” he said at a gala dinner on the launch of “Aspiring Entrepreneur Network & Women Entrepreneur Network” held 27 July 2018.

Indian companies are attracted to Singapore for ease of doing business, registering a company and opening a bank account.

“If this same thing can be replicated there (in India), I think there will be many more Singapore companies going to India,” said Dr T. Chandroo who is also chairman of the Modern Montessori International Group (MMI) which has schools in Southeast Asia and India.

MMI has also set up 20 centres in India for training teachers for its rapidly expanding school network.

“India urgently needs trained teachers and MMI has been fortunate enough to have got off to an early start in this activity,” he said.

Among MMI network is its school franchise with Airport Authority of India (AAI), which provides training to the spouses of its employees to become teachers and run MMI pre-schools at airports across the country.

MMI is also working with Kerala’s Muslim Education Society which has a college in Calicut with more than 30,000 students who comes from all religious and walks of life. fiinews.com
