India to restart fertilizer plants for agri-revolution

Eastern India will give a fillip to the Second Green Revolution.

India is investing Rs.50,000 crore on the revival of closed fertilizer plants, Rs.13,000 crore on a natural gas pipeline and Rs.6,000 crore on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the eastern region of the country.

Fast pace development of infrastructure in an agri-focused Eastern India will give a fillip to the Second Green Revolution in the region, said Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan.

A joint review meeting of ministers, held in New Delhi 27 April 2017, said Rs.20,000 crore investment will be made to revive the Fertilizer Plants in Gorakhpur (UP), Barauni (Bihar) Sindri (Jharkhand), and Rs.8,000 crore on Talcher Fertilizer plant (Odisha).

The ground work for these Plants is scheduled to commence in FY 2017-18, and would be fully functional by 2020-21.

The Talcher Unit is being revived by a consortium of PSUs namely Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF), Gas Authority of India (GAIL), Coal India Ltd. (CIL) and FCIL.

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), CIL & National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) have registered a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL) for revival of closed urea plants of FCIL at Gorakhpur and Sindri and of Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd. (HFCL) at Barauni.

An Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) has also been constituted to oversee the revival process.

Natural gas will be a major source for the plants for which Rs.13,000 crore will be spent on 2,650-km Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Pipeline Project.

Pradhan said the 2,650 km Jagdishpur-Haldia & Bokaro-Dhamra Natural Gas Pipeline (JHBDPL) Project, is being implemented by GAIL (India) Ltd.

The Pipeline passes through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.

Construction work of this Pipeline Project in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has started.

The pipeline network is to connect Eastern India to the National Gas Grid.

The LNG terminal is being set up at Dhamra in Odisha. fii-news.com
