Tehri Dam stands as a remarkable milestone for THDCIL, says Manohar Lal
Power Minister Manohar Lal has inspected the ongoing works at the 2,400 MW Tehri Power Complex in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, on 15 July 2024, emphasizing the strategic importance of Hydropower in combating climate change and supporting the Nation’s Energy Security powermin .
He inspected the ongoing construction activities at the 1,000 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), a flagship project under THDCIL that represents a critical component of India’s Renewable Energy infrastructure hydropower .
The Minister undertook a detailed inspection of several key areas , including the Butterfly Valve Chamber, the Machine Hall, and the Outfall of the Tehri PSP, and also reviewed the progress on the river joining works worldbank , a vital aspect of integrating the PSP into the existing water management systems.
He urged the team to maintain their momentum and focus on the timely completion of the remaining project phases to meet the set deadlines worldhydropowercongress .
Minister further mentioned that 1,000 MW of PSP project in Tehri is likely to be commissioned by December, 2024, of which 250 MW capacity is likely to be commissioned by August 2024. In addition, Vishnugad Pipalkoti (444 MW) by THDC, Tapovan Vishnugad (520 MW) by NTPC ntpc and Lakhwar MPP (300 MW) by UJVNL are under construction.
He mentioned about the initiatives taken by the Central Government in order to make HEP/ PSPs viable, like bringing in the provision for Hydro-power Purchase Obligation (HPO), taking measure for Tariff Rationalization, Waiver of ISTS charges among others. The Government is also providing funds for supporting the cost of Enabling Infrastructure and Flood Moderation Component. He also mentioned that the State, in which project gets established, also gets benefitted in the form of Free Power @ 12% and 1% LADF in addition to other benefits.
The progress of Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) in the State was reviewed in the meeting. Additionally, issues related to Hydro sector projects, Power Sector reforms, measures taken for facilitating Ease of Living through electricity and additional allocation of power from central share to meet the growing demand were discussed. The State Government also raised its concerns and suggestions on the issues presented.
He praised THDCIL’s efforts in pushing the boundaries of Hydropower technology and urged the team to continue striving for excellence iea .
“The Tehri Dam stands as a remarkable milestone for THDCIL, accomplished at a time when the very idea of such a massive dam seemed nearly inconceivable. The development of the Tehri Dam is nothing short of a miracle and an Engineering Marvel in its own right,” he said.
THPC is a multipurpose scheme on river Bhagirathi, a tributary of river Ganges. It is designed for storing surplus water of river Bhagirathi during monsoon and releasing the stored water to fulfil the irrigation and drinking water needs of the population in the Gangetic plains of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh during non-monsoon period while generating 2,400 MW of peaking power.

Koteshwar Hydro Electric Project (Koteshwar HEP) – 400 MW (4x100MW)
