PSUs to set up reactors by 2031, says Minister

The Government has given bulk approval for the installation of 10 nuclear reactors, costing Rs.105,000 crores, Atomic Energy and Space Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has told Lok Sabha on 5 Apr 2023.

He said the Government has roped in PSUs for the installation of the nuclear reactors for the exercise would be done exclusively by the specialized Government agencies

These reactors are planned to be set up in ‘fleet mode’ progressively by the year 2031.

The Government has accorded administrative approval and financial sanction for 10 indigenous Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors of 700 MW each in fleet mode, he said.

The details:

Karnataka – location: Kaiga, project: Kaiga-5&6, capacity: 2 X 700 MW

Haryana – Gorakhpur, GHAVP– 3&4, 2 X 700 MW

Madhya Pradesh – Chutka, Chutka-1&2, 2 X 700 MW

Rajasthan – Mahi Banswara, Mahi Banswara-1&2, 2 X 700 MW and Mahi Banswara-3&4, 2 X 700 MW.

The Government has amended the Atomic Energy Act in 2015 to enable the Joint Ventures of NPCIL with Public Sector Enterprises to set up nuclear power projects.

He also informed the Rajya Sabha that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have jointly manufactured an earth science satellite named, NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar).

Meanwhile, the Minister told Lok Sabha that the present installed nuclear power capacity is set to increase to 22,480 MW by 2031 on progressive completion of projects under construction and accorded sanction from 6,780 MW at present.

During 2021-22, the country’s nuclear power reactors generated 47,112 million units of electricity, which comprises about 3.15% of the total electricity generated. fiinews.com
