Indigenous technology-based Train 18 has achieved 180 km per hour speed, making it the fastest train in India. The semi-high-speed train has been approved by the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS), said Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

CCRS has approved the train to run at a maximum speed of 160 kmph for commercial operation with sturdy fencing along its rail-route.

The CCRS’ 21 conditions include sturdy fencing at vulnerable location on need basis for speed up to 130 kmph and all along the track for a speed beyond 130 kmph and up to 160 kmph.

Goyal tweeted on 26 Dec 2018 “Need for Speed: Train 18 seen cruising at a sustained 180 kmph, officially becoming the fastest train in India.”

CCRS has inspected the 16-coach train speed between station and Agra.

The fully air-conditioned train has modern amenities and accommodation for 1,128 passengers.

Its features include automatic doors, sliding footsteps, sealed gangways and disabled-friendly toilets and spaces. It also has world class facilities such as infotainment, bio-vacuum toilets, GPS-based information system, mobile charging points as well as climate control systems to adjust temperature according to weather and occupancy.

The prototype cost approximately Rs.100 crore.
